What Makes A Dad
God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad
"The righteous man walks in his integrity; his children are blessed after him."
- Proverbs 20:7 (NKJV)

Remembering B.B. King (1925-2015)
Born Riley B. King in 1925, B.B. King began performing as a busker on street corners. The song “Three O’Clock Blues” propelled him to fame. With his passion for art and showmanship, and his willingness to remain true to his vision despite shifting trends, Mr. King served the best of the blues to several generations. In turn, those fans and others who follow will continue to honor him as they savor the music he loved.
Happy Mother's Day!
Happy Cinco de Mayo!
Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867).
A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations. Cinco de Mayo traditions include parades, mariachi music performances and street festivals in cities and towns across Mexico and the United States. |

Credit Card Perks You Didn’t Know You Had
In addition to rewards tied to spending, many credit cards offer additional perks for free. Below are some of our favorites:
• Rental Car Insurance Coverage - all Visa and most MasterCard, Discover, and American Express cards offer this. Don't pay for it at the counter. • Purchase Protection - if you buy something and notice a print ad for less, many cards will credit you the difference. • Roadside Assistance - though not as comprehensive as AAA, you can often get towed to a nearby garage for free. • Extended Warranty - your credit card company may automatically extend the original manufacturer's warranty. |
Meet the NAACP History Makers
During Black History Month, the NAACP asked supporters to send in the names of people they know who have recently taken their civil rights activism to the next level. Whether on the national scale, or in their own backyards, the NAACP recognized all of the courageous brothers and sisters taking a stand against injustice, discrimination, and inequality. Hundreds of names were submitted, and the NAACP proudly shares them all.
Meet the 2015 NAACP History Makers here. |

Latham Family Reunion National Chapter Annual Meeting Conference Call
They Fought for Our Vote!
In June of 1964, civil rights groups came together to kick off Freedom Summer, a 10-week campaign to dramatically increase the number of registered black voters in Mississippi. More than 1,000 volunteers of all races and colors, from all over the nation, traveled to Mississippi to do this important work.
While there, youth volunteers and their black Mississippian supporters suffered unimaginable levels of vitriol and violence, but they did not stop fighting for what was right. In the end, Freedom Summer emerged as a defining moment in the Civil Rights Movement, pushing our country one step closer to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

8 Books by Black Authors That Should Be Made Into Movies
In Remembrance: Dr. Maya Angelou (1928 - 2014)
A literary voice revered globally for her poetic command and her commitment to civil rights has fallen silent. Prolific American author, poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou——your passing has suspended reality for all of us, as you were truly an "illuminator." Your beauty, both internal and external, will never be extinguished from our minds.

Moment of Remembrance
Memorial Day is a Federal holiday and commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in military service. It was first enacted to honor Union soldiers of the Civil War. At 3:00 pm local time all Americans are encouraged to pause for one minute of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to our country.
“A nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces, but also by the men it remembers, the men it honors.”

Do You Know?
Day Light Savings 2014!
In case you haven't heard the news, it's almost time! The "time" has finally come! In just a few days, millions of Americans will "spring forward." The annual clock adjusting ritual is almost here!
For most of the United States, Daylight Saving Time (DST) occurs on the second Sunday in March. At 2:00 a.m. local time on March 9, 2014, most Americans will move their clocks, watches, alarm clocks and handy-dandy gadgets forward one hour. While that means one less hour of sleep, it also means we are one-step closer to warmer weather!
